FATMAP - 3D mapping, topographical or photo view with various useful overlays.  Basic version is free and really usable, subscription available annually, or monthly (great if you're only using it in the winter).  Paid version allows offline use and custom overlays.  By far the best tool we've found for planning, but can be frustratingly slow.

ORTOVOX - Uploaded routes, mapping, conditions updates, ability to record a track, and emergency call feature.  Has tools including altimeter, compass and gradient.
